Sunday was the 2nd running of the Waseca Sprint and 1/3 Iron Triathlon. Last year it was held by WIN Multisports, but since then, WIN was sold to Mark Bongers of Final Stretch. And Final Stretch did a great job of putting on the race this year. Make sure to check out the slideshow at the bottom of the page.
A total of 236 athletes finished the Sprint of the 1/3 Iron on Sunday (136 in the Sprint, 100 in the 1/3 Iron). And all of them will tell you "it was a hot one!" The Sprint racers did a 400 meter swim, 14 mile bike, and 4.4 mile run. The 1/3 Iron racers did a 1 mile swim, 34 mile bike, and an 8.8 mile run.
In the Sprint race, Jesse Nelson took first for the second year in a row. He had a solid swim and bike, and he capped off his race with the fastest run split of the day to finish in 1:10:52. About 2 minutes behind him was Matt Maxon, who finished in 1:12:48. And third place went to Mario Minelli who posted the fastest bike split of the day and finished close behind Maxon in 1:13:07.
On the female side, Katherine Schlaefer had a great race to take the win, especially taking into account that she's coming off some big injuries. Schlaefer finished in 1:19:31, which was also good for 8th overall! Four minutes behind her was the second female, Dawn Substad, who finished in 1:23:23. And the third place female was Jennifer Johansen who finished in 1:26:50.
The 1/3 Iron racers really got to suffer through the heat as the day grew hotter as it went along. Dan Cohen repeated as the overall winner in a time of 2:42:29. Doug Davis, who was second, was nearly 8 minutes back. Davis had a better swim than Cohen, but could not match Dan's bike or run speed, so Davis finished in 2:50:11. And Dalseth Pascel was third in 2:54:26.
In the female 1/3 Iron race, Susan Williams used a speedy swim and solid run to take the win in 3:06:30. Suzie Finger was second for the second year in a row in 3:09:54, and Lydia Novotny was third in 3:13:27. Finger and Novotny met up in the medical tent just after finishing to try to cool down (see photos below) - it was really starting to get hot.
