David Thompson, a pro triathlete living in St. Paul, is currently leading in the "Toyota Cup" standings.
There are 6 Olympic distance races in the series, the second of which is our own Lifetime Fitness Triathlon at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis. The Chicago Triathlon was this past weekend, which was the 4th in the series. The final 2 races are both in October.
Heading into this month-long break, Thompson has a 4,000 point lead over Filip Ospaly. Thompson has racked up 29,000 points in the first 4 races. (The points system is 10,000 for first, 9,000 for second, 8,000 for third, and so on). Ospaly has 25,000 points, and last year's Toyota Cup winner, Matty Reed, has 21,000 points.
It's still anyone's game, but it's great to see our hometown boy in the lead!
In the women's race, the Wassner twins (Rebeccah and Laurel) are in first and third with 25,000 and 22,000 points. Second is Nicole Kelleher with 23,000 points. And last year's winner, olympian Sarah Haskins, is still in the mix in 4th place with 20,000 points.
Thompson is planning on racing his first Iron Distance race shortly at Rev3 Cedar Point. Then, hopefully he'll be able to bang out 1 or 2 more speedy Olys in October to take the Toyota Cup. Good luck, David!
