Sad news for Celiacs and Gluten-Free cake fans. Starbucks announced they will no longer be selling the Valencia Orange Cake.
The announcement came yesterday via a Starbucks tweet - “We heard that it was too much of a treat, and not a nutritious snack. The @KindSnacks bar is replacing it.”
So now that a mainstream company has ended the production and sale of another Gluten-Free item, what food do you wish Starbucks would make gluten-free?

Scones would be a nice replacement, or a healthy whole grain muffin.
What else in the Starbucks bakery case is not considered a treat? How can Kind Bars replace a delicious cake???
I really loved that cake; but I would still enjoy a scone, muffin, or gluten free cookies!
They need to make that outrageous lemon pound cake gluten-free. It's one of the things I miss most since my diagnosis.
Wasn't the whole point to have it as a treat??? My son is 8 and was diagnosed in January. That simple cake thrilled him beyond belief...being able to go out and eat "normal" cake right out of the case was a big deal for him. He loves the Kind Bar, but we can get them anywhere and that's not what I consider a "treat"!
Just because I am Celiac does not mean I should be forced to live on nuts and twigs because they are "healthy". Since celiac is, unfortunately, linked with anorexia and eating disorders I wonder if the more outspoken members of the celiac community who have these issues influenced Starbucks? Me, I'll eat any non- gluten food product that does not try to eat me first! And I do not count calories.
Starbucks is making a HORRIBLE mistake. This cake was quite a treat for those of us that can't imbibe on "regular" cakes! I am deeply disappointed. And if they are talking about having "healthy" items, do you believe that these heavily loaded coffee drinks are very health conscious? Come on Starbucks, wake up!
This is a huge mistake for Starbucks. The valencia orange cake was indeed a treat. However, it's no more a treat than lemon pound cake or muffins as big as your head. Speaking of which, either of those offered gluten free would be awesome. Or how about a gluten free espresso brownie?? I miss those greatly.
It's like diet punishment all over again. You can't eat wheat, so take your seat and look at your feet.
The Valencia Orange cakes didn't sell well at our location though we promoted them heavily. We had a couple of customers who bought them occasionally, but that's about it. It's certainly a challenge for the company to develop items for specific dietary requirements and still make them "cravable" on an ongoing basis. I'm sure they'll continue to work on it.
Big mistake, Starbucks.
IT'S CAKE!!!!! It's not supposed to be healthy. C-A-K-E!!!!!!!
Anyway, I think Starbucks should consider contracting with GF bakeries to bring an assortment of GF items (created in dedicated facilities) to the menu.
The flavor of the Orange cake was less taste satisfying than cardboard. Sorry guys if I want orange I would eat the fruit instead. I want rich, creamy, and sinfully delicious. Why not chocolate or a cranberry treat. A gluten free scone or chocolate brownie bites. I already have to eat healthy so eating out is a treat (sometimes it feels like a chore) don't make us look at a pitiful excuse of a desert cause its gf. Betty Crocker in a box can do better than that.
Got something to say?
