Gage Rapitta finished off a strong rookie camp with the Tri-City Americans by scoring a pair of goals Saturday night as the Blue team defeated the White 5-4 at the annual Todd Klassen Memorial game that concludes the four-day camp.
The Blue team broke a 2-2 tie late in the second period on a goal by Taylor Marr at 13:43. Duncan Edney scored with 1:26 left in the second for a 4-2 lead, and Edney assisted on Trevor Moore's goal 2:50 into the third to make it 5-2.
The White team kept things close as Brett Myer scored twice in the final 5:38 -- the second on the game's only power-play goal.
Rapitta scored the game's first two goals, but the White team tied it at 2 on goals by Matt Rypien and Lucas Nickles in the second period.
Rapitta, Moore and Nickles were among 11 rookies invited to take part in the Americans' main camp beginning Monday.
Also invited to camp were the team's last two first-round picks, F Connor Rankin ('09) and G Eric Comrie ('10), as well as another young goalie, Chris Driedger, who beat out fellow 16-year-old goalie Jonah Imoo in a competition for which netminder is the unofficial No. 3 for this season (Comrie is ineligible for WHL play as a 15-year-old).
Other invites went to Riley Guenther, Dylan Fluter, Matt Hughesman, Justin Hamonic and Brian Williams. Williams may not attend, however, because of prior commitments.
Kennewick native Chad Staley, who did not receive an invite to main camp, had two assists for the White team.
