Why are younger men dating older women -- ie "cougars?
Cougar Town will hit the small screens the fall starring Courtney Cox as a 40+ divorced single mom dating younger guys.
"It's the {hot} topic right now. Cougars are out there in the world,"
ABC's Cougar Town is about
"what it means to age in modern times as a woman, "But if our show's title was 40 and Single, no one would give a (darn)."
says Bill Lawrence, Cougar Town's executive producer/writer/director.
In Hollywood,
Cougars barely turn a head. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, and Tilda Swinton and Sandro Kopp, are some of the stars in a Cougar relationship.
Coming later in the summer Cooper Boone will bring out Cougar Dream, an ode to a lady who's
"a Demi Moore double with wildcat eyes."
So what changed? What's the deal with Cougars?
A relationship expert for a dating site, and author of Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men, Valerie Gibson, says
"Suddenly aging isn't so awful," "That was always a dreadful thing — women were supposed to shut down and be invisible and go away and drop off a cliff. Try telling that to women today. It just isn't in the books. Cougars are desirable and sexy."
"Initially, there were people like Cher, but people gave her a bad time," Gibson says. "Celebrities from Madonna to Gwyneth Paltrow are dating or marrying younger men. It suits their lifestyle. They look younger, they act younger. The age gap is diminished."
Valerie Gibson has her explanation. She contends that young men like older women for mainly one reason: older women aren't as likely to get pregnant. "Been there, done that" might be the Cougar's mantra when it comes to men their age. Looking at the younger guys brings new challenges and new appeal for the Cougar.

I'm 46 and really, this cougar thing is soooo over-rated. My son-in-law is 25. I can't even imagine dating someone his age. I don't need verification that I am "young" by dating a younger man. Crazy stuff.
With all due respect to Valerie Gibson, younger guys like older women because of their sexual confidence and experience (perceived or otherwise), not because they're not going to get pregnant! lol
