Shepard Fairey lied about famous Hope poster for Obama
Shepard Fairey, an internationally known street artist, made even more famous because of the Obama Hope poster he created, lied to his attorneys about the source of the image.
Fairey said he made the Hope poster from a photo taken of Senator Obama seated next to George Clooney taken by Mannie Garcia, on assignment for the AP, at the National Press Club in Washington.
The AP has maintained all along in a copyright suit against Fairey that he used a different photo, taken by the same photographer as the basis for the Hope poster.
Shepard Fairey has made his bad-boy reputation through his rule-breaking street art. He started the lawsuits by suing AP for saying he violated copyright law. AP counter-sued for copyright infringement. Now Fairey has admitted he lied and his lawyers have quit the case.
"In an attempt to conceal my mistake, I submitted false images and deleted other images,I sincerely apologize for my lapse in judgment, and I take full responsibility for my actions, which were mine alone."
said Fairey.
Fairey says just because he lied about the original source of the Obama Hope poster, he still should not be held liable for violating copyright laws because of the "fair use" doctrine.
