Gender blending fashions
When Desperate Housewives wanted to cover up Felicity Huffman's Lynette Scavo character's pregnancy, she donned her hubbies shirt, vest, and tie.
Tom Scavo liked it. He admitted he was turned on by the androgynous/gender bender look and proceeded to demonstrate his arousal with enthusiasm. This stylish winner carried over to the office where Lynette was complimented on her new look.
The androgynous look has been around for a long time as boyfriend shirts, boyfriend jeans, and even boyfriend jackets take up wardrobe space for fashionistas.
So does it work the other way? If a straight young stud shows up with a slinky scarf thrown around his neck falling into an open to the waist taffeta sheer, revealing a hairless chest, is this becoming attractive to women? How about a guy that wears a pastel lame hoodie? Do chicks go for this - more importantly, will they go for it in the future?
Some fashion say yes and are trying to bridge the gap for guys to dress in more feminine fashion to open a new market for girlfriend shirts and accessories.
Gender blending is in the mainstream purveyors of hip, including Urban Outfitters and American Apparel, are offering clothing and jewelry meant to be worn by either sex.
These days, one psychologist says, “gender blurring is not only acceptable but cool.” And even utilitarian: “It’s a way of breaking down sexualized relationships,” says a woman who dips into the men’s aisle for work, “to find a common ground.” But don’t expect it to last, says one expert. “To carry it off, you need the physique of an adolescent boy,” and youth-only trends aren’t “going to be economically sustained.”
What say you? Will boys wearing girls clothes be the next hot thing to attract young girls? Is gender blending finally including boys dressing as girls?
