Donna Karan, famed fashion designer, will be the toast of other famous New Yorkers as they gather Tuesday, May 4th to honor the 10th Anniversary of the Continuum Center for Heath & Healing, an innovative and thriving initiative of Beth Israel Medical Center, at Espace on West 42nd Street in New York City.

Donna Karan's Urban Zen initiative has created an optimal healing environment at Beth Israel Medical Center, where western medicine blends seamlessly with the spiritual and emotional needs of the patient.

As Karan explains on the website:

"The Urban Zen Foundation creates, connects and collaborates to raise awareness and inspire change in the areas of well-being, empowering children and preserving cultures. We design forums, partner with existing organizations and bring together experts to define solutions and implement action.

WELL-BEING
Our focus is to change the current health care paradigm to include integrative medicine and promote patient advocacy.

We must treat the patient with the same passion we treat the disease by combining western science with nutrition, yoga and eastern healing practices.

EMPOWERING CHILDREN
Our mission is to care for our children’s well-being and give them the tools to face obstacles and opportunities with love, compassion & strength.

We collaborate with existing children’s organizations and create programs to enhance their spiritual, physical and emotional growth.

PRESERVING CULTURES
Our goal is to help cultures maintain their natural essence and identity in the face of globalization.

We connect with programs that help communities preserve their unique cultural and spiritual values. We celebrate their creativity and craft to allow their sustainability."

Guests will be exposed to some of the organic therapy implemented at the center:

  • oxygen bar,
  • an organic juice bar,
  • and a reiki healing touch station.

MeccaBodega, a New York City based percussion band will entertain guests during dinner.

The evening will culminate with a rare and unique performance by international recording artist Elvis Costello.

Event co-chairs, Tamara Davis & Michael Diamond, Michelle & Asher Edelman, Sharon J. Handler & Ambassador John L. Loeb, Sheila C. Johnson, Margaret & Daniel Loeb, and Pat Collins & Bill Sarnoff, will be joined by benefit committee members Michael Stipe, Uma Thurman, Christy Turlington, Dayssi & Paul Kanavos, Linda & Benjamin Lambert, Kathy & Woodson Merrell MD, and Fiona & Eric Rudin.

The Continuum Center for Health and Healing, is an initiative of Beth Israel Medical Center founded by Dr. Woodson Merrell in June 2000.
