Since Machu Picchu became one of the new seven wonders of the world, tourism to the area has exploded. Along with seeing the lost city, more adventuresome travelers choose to walk the Inca trail, however with the current influx of tourists, as well as admittance restrictions, it is more difficult to book the popular trail.
The Lares Trail is another great alternative to the Inca Trail. Although Lares is less popular it is a very rewarding experience. The tour typically last 4 days and 3 nights, two of which are spent camping in the mountains around Machu Picchu.
Other treks such as Salkantay tend to be more difficult, and travelers should be warned. It isn´t impossible of course, but please take into account the altitude and how it may affect your body.
The Lares Trail is off the beaten path and gives travelers a chance to experience the Andean people living in the area. There are no ruins on route, but I feel that the rural farming communities provide a unique experience compared to the other treks. It all depends on what you are looking for.
We booked our trek with Pachamama Explorers and we were vert pleased with them on a whole. Our group´s only complaint was that we would have wanted more of a warning about the altitude sickness that many travelers experience on the hike.
Our Itinerary:
Day3: Cancha Cancha – Huaran (2,800m) – Ollantaytambo (2,700m) – Aguas Calientes
