Yoga to the people
Yoga to the people has a philosophy: everyone should be able to practice yoga, even those who may not be able to afford the usually expensive rates. Yoga's popularity has allowed for prices to skyrocket, notably in New York City and the surrounding areas. As much as yoga studios emphasize the serenity and inclusive nature of the practice, at the end of the day it is a business, a fairly profitable one.
Yoga to the people is a unique studio that strives to allow all people to practice. They work on a donation basis. This is how the website describes the process.
What does “donation basis” mean and how does it work?
A donation is the sacred act of giving. There is a suggested donation of $10 a class. Suggested donation means that if you can put $10 in the box, please do. If you are not in a position to do so, contribute what you can. Nobody will be keeping track of individual donations. The $10 dollar donation is not meant as a bottom or a top limit… if you are in a position to donate more, it will be greatly appreciated.
There are three studios in New York City:
East Village St. Marks offers power vinyasa
27th Street offers traditional hot yoga
38th Street offers hot power vinyasa
So if you would like to continue your yoga regimen even you are low on cash, you have the option to pay only what you can at Yoga to the people.
