After visiting Gravelly Point, head a little south along the Mount Vernon Trail to the Wilson Bridge, and a dedicated lane for cyclists and walkers to cross the river, safe from traffic.
The pedestrian lane, located on the northbound side of the bridge at Washington Street, allows for access across the Potomac River, from Old Town Alexandria to the National Harbor in Prince Georges County, Maryland.
Along the bridge span are several viewing spots, complete with telescopes, pointed up river in the direction of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Old Town Alexandria and points farther North along the Western bank of the river in Virginia. The tower of the George Washington Masonic Temple is visible a little farther West and provides a familiar landmark against dramatic evening sunsets, and planes heading into the airport for landing make interesting patterns in the evening's clouds.
Pack the same cameras and lenses as for Gravelly Point and, if shooting film, be sure to bring color. If possible, plan your visit following an afternoon storm for cloud remnants, rainbows, and swirly skies. Spend a little time on the ground beneath the bridge with a wide-angle for sweeping arches.
