If you have a smart phone, whether an Android, an iPhone or a Windows Mobile cellphone, you can easily, quickly and safely let your loved ones know where you are and when you will get where you are going by downloading and using "Glympse". As more and more of the traveling public are exasperated with the hassles of flying, this Fourth of July is shaping up to be one of the busiest road traveling holidays of the year.
This means traffic jams, bathroom breaks and potential car issues could hamper driving plans. Location-sharing services and GPS notifications have changed the way we update our friends and family as to where we are, but check-in services only do so much when you are on the open road. One service, Glympse, goes beyond the static check in to provide anyone with real-time view to where you are – even if it is stuck on the freeway in bumper to bumper traffic.
Glympse is a free smartphone app that instantly shares your location with family and friends. A Glympse message is as easy as sending text or making a phone call – simply send it once and your listed recipients will be updated of your location on a dynamic map in real time, for up to four hours. It alleviates the need to continually call or text to give a location check; your friends and family can see your mph and ETA so know when you are almost to your destination.
Users can send a Glympse to Facebook or Twitter to update their friends, and it’s extremely useful for time sensitive situations, like driving home from work or when meeting friends. With Glympse, you are not just checking in, you are letting recipients travel with you, no matter where you are.
Glympse can be downloaded for free on the iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Mobile phones.
How to use Glympse:
Upside:
Simple -Glympse is easier and faster than a phone call or text message, simply select a contact, set a duration, and hit send.
Flexible -Anyone with an Internet-enabled phone or computer can receive a Glympse – no software or setup required. You can send a Glympse to a specific person, several people, or even to Facebook and Twitter.
Safe-Only Glympse puts you in control – you set who sees you and for how long. Safe for families, friends, colleagues, and one-time meetings.
Additional Plus for Safety - It also helps keep you from being stopped for texting or calling to let people know where you are while you are driving. Reminder: In the state of Washington cell phone calling or texting is now a primary offense that the police can and will stop you for on the roads this holiday! Avoid that $124 fine by allowing "Glympse" to keep everyone up-to-date on your progress!
Downside:
As an Android user, it can eat the battery life of an Android phone in a very short time, so if you are using it in your car, be sure you have a CLA to plugin and continually charge the battery. I experienced decrease battery life so had to turn it off until I could plug in my cigarette lighter adapter to keep the battery drain at a minimum.
If you are a Smart Phone user, whether Android, Windows Mobile or iPhone, please comment below to share your experience of allowing Glympse to work for you in your travels, vacation or work. Oh yes, have safe travels this Fourth of July!

That is a nice app! I wish my iPod had 3G capability for such a good app!
This is really interesting!
Great idea! I do believe in keeping in touch. Also like the apps out there now that different cities and tourist destinations have available.
So many cool travel apps. Thanks for telling us about this.
