While the projected path of Hurricane Earl is still being debated, many airlines serving the mid-Atlantic and Northeast states are waiving change fees for those with fights into and out of the affected areas.
Locally based (for now) Frontier Airlines has waived change fees for flights to and from Williamsburg/Newport News, Virginia and Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina. Continental is waiving change fees concerning flights into and out of their Newark hub.
Other airlines which have extensive service along the mid-Atlantic and northeast include United (hub in Washington DC), Jet Blue (hub at Kennedy, New York), Delta and US Airways which operate shuttles between Boston, New York and Washington DC as well as commuter flights to smaller communities along the eastern seaboard.
It is best to check your specific airline’s websites for rules and options. From experience and what I advise clients; reschedule a few days beyond if possible as Labor Day Weekend in addition to a holiday is also a stretch of days when many parents and children travel to and from the Northeast preparing for the fall semester for colleges and universities.
In addition many of the airports within the sphere of influence of Hurricane Earl are close to coastal waterways/inlets including Boston Logan, New York’s Kennedy, New Jersey’s Newark, Washington’s National and others. While heavy rain may bypass the areas, strong winds from the outer bands of the hurricane may prompt airports to curtail or shut-down service.
