You don't see "free" often associated with Hollywood movies.
But thanks to several local communities and a company promoting the use of portable film projection, area residents and visitors have the opportunity to save a buck as part of the summertime "Movies in the Park" program.
This week, the program heads to National City's Little Padres Park Little League field at Kimball Park.
The gathering begins 7 p.m. on Friday with pre-screening festivities scheduled to run until dusk. Once darkness falls, the featured film is "The Sandlot," a summer fun film from the '90s about a new kid who moves to a new neighborhood and sets out to learn how to baseball. That would be real baseball, outdoors, with cleats, bats, gloves . . . not that indoor video game noise.
Kimball Park is located at 1300 A Avenue in National City.
In National City, the free series is set for the second Friday of the month through Sept., Movies in the Park are available throughout San Diego County this summer in such localities as Bonita and Spring Valley and from Coronado to Oceanside.
