“The Premier Baggage subscription gives customers the ability to travel with a streamlined check-in process and additional convenience,” says Jeff Foland, senior vice president of worldwide sales & distribution. “Whether you're taking your family on a dream vacation, or just wishing to pack an extra set of clothes for comfort, Premier Baggage enables you to have everything you need at your side to help fully enjoy your travels.”

The Premier Baggage option, introduced today (Oct. 5, 2009) is the latest addition to United Airlines Travel Options portfolio. Under the new program, customers will pay a flat fee that will then allow them to check two standard-sized bags at no additional cost every time they fly on any international or domestic flight operated by United or United Express. The annual subscription also covers the standard checked baggage charge for checked baggage for up to eight companions traveling under the same confirmation number as the subscriber.

Customers can purchase a Premier Baggage subscription for an introductory price of $249 from united.com/premierbaggage. Subscriptions can also be purchased as a gift. The Premier Baggage subscription does not waive fees associated with oversized and overweight bags or fees assessed for checking more than two bags per person.

Global Services, Premier Executive, Mileage Plus Premier and Premier or Premier Associate members are exempt from first and second bag fees on standard bags as are Star Alliance Gold or Silver members. Any active U.S. Military personnel and/or a dependent with ID and traveling on orders are also exempt from checked baggage fees. Baggage fees do not apply to passengers traveling in United First or United Business.

Since May 14, 2009, checked baggage fees on domestic (within the US) United flights were $20 for the first bag and $30 for the second. Passengers can receive a discount of $5 on each of these fees by checking their bags using EasyCheck-in at united.com.

United's checked baggage policies for travel to/from or between international destinations has recently changed. As of September 30, 2009, passengers on international flights must check their baggage at least 45 minutes prior to departure time. If you are traveling internationally before December 15, 2009, there is no fee for checked baggage on flights to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean. No checked baggage fees apply if you are traveling after December 15, 2009 as long as you purchased your ticket before September 30, 2009. If you have not purchased your ticket and will be traveling to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean after December 15, 2009, your first checked bag is still free, however a $30 fee will be assessed on your second piece of checked luggage. These rules apply to standard size luggage only. Additional fees may apply to oversize or overweight baggage, if it is allowed at all.

The Premier Baggage subscription is the 13th product in United's Travel Option portfolio. All products are aimed at providing United customers with the opportunity to customize their travel experience by offering comfortable and convenient travel alternatives from Economy Plus to their Red Carpet Club.
