Mexico puts out the sanitized welcome mat

With summer vacations just around the corner,Mexico is putting out the sanitized welcome mat and mixing in some great deals to bring travelers back to south of the border. Children stay and eat free. Although the CDC’s travel health warning to Mexico is still in effect, I’m counting the days, 27 to be exact, until my family and friends' reunion in Playa del Carma. in Mexico's Riviera Maya. Our group’s ages range from my two grandchildren, ages 2 and 4, to baby boomers and retirees. Am I worried about the "swine flu?" No, I’d leave today, because reportedly the scientists say that this flu strain (H1N1 virus, aka swine flu) is less impactful than the “run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur each winter.” 

A recent article in the LA Times reports that Mexico’s Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova said five top beach areas -- Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Mazatlan, Zihuatanejo and Cozumel -- have not registered any confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus (aka swine flu). At least one case comes out of Cancun.

Several hotels in Mexico, such as Real Resorts,  are even offering the “Flu Free Guarantee” assuring 3 years of free vacations. According to a MSNBC article, some 5,000 hotels, including Secrets and Dreams Resorts & Spas, are involved in the promotion.
