As the deadline closes in, the states seem as firm as ever on their stances – those that are complying and those that are not.
The ACLU Blog of Rights suggests the government will blink: News Flash: Another Fake Deadline Ignored; Real ID Still Dead
According to their blog entry dated December 3rd: Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) pushed Napolitano to commit to granting extensions to states. Although she refused apparently the Department of Homeland Security later issued a statement admitting they would extend the deadline.
Senator Udall had discussed this issue in his weekly radio show on December 1st. Senator Udall said that more than 30 states are not in compliant and will not be able to make deadline.
He noted that he planned to pursue this further when Janet Napolitano met with his Commerce Committee.
Apparently Senator Udall did exactly as promised.
Perhaps the federal government and Homeland Security will rethink the deadline, and this program.
