Cruises 101: How can I cure sea sickness?

(AP Photo/Rick Rycroft)

There truly is no cure for sea sickness, but it is preventable and avoidable.  If you know that you're not a good flier, and you get motion sickness in the car, then chances are you're not going to fare very well on deck.  Here are some tips to keeping yourself healthy, and nausea-free on your next boating trip:

  • Keep yourself hydrated.
  • If you begin to feel sea sick, go to the deck to get fresh air and stare at the horizon.
  • Keep your body fresh by eating healthy and nutritional foods; stay away from preservatives and salts that will dry out your body.
  • Try not to fight the vomit; either keep your mind occupied by involving in externally stimulating activities or just let it flow.
  • The best remedy is to know your body!  Understand what makes you queezy and how to make yourself feel better.

Sea sickness is not an ailment; the nausea and drowsiness from sea sickness are not caused from bacteria or any type of virus.  Instead, your body is out of wack because your brain can't understand its positioning in time and space.  Larger cruising vessels today are equipped with stabilizers to help balance the sway, and the larger the ship, the less it will be affected by waves.

Either way, here's 3 suggestive cures for sea sickness:

  1. Bands - there are elastic bands that press on certain pressure points; usually you can find a pair to go on your wrists.
  2. Medication - there are prescription medications for sea sickness, but I suggest taking the natural route.
  3. Natural fix - eating properly and keeping yourself hydrated is the best cure for common sea sickness.
