FDOT improves roads in Palatka
Work is scheduled to begin this week in Palatka on a project adding traffic signals and pedestrian crossings on S.R.20 (Crill Avenue) at Elmwood Drive in Putnam County, according to a Florida DOT spokesperson.
The new signal replaces stop signs at Elmwood Drive next to Taco Bell and the entrance to Burger King across the street. It will allow motorists from Elmwood Drive, currently restricted to right turns only, to turn left (eastbound) onto Crill Avenue or proceed straight into the Burger King parking lot.
The median will be widened to allow more room for turning vehicles, and both the east- and westbound turn lanes will be lengthened to accommodate additional motorists.
Pedestrian crosswalks and signals will be added for crossing both Crill Avenue and Elmwood Drive. The new pedestrian signals include a countdown of seconds remaining to cross the intersection.
During the first week of construction, the contractor will be placing signs and trimming trees. Crews plan to work week days only unless bad weather or other unforeseen conditions cause schedules to extend into the weekends. When lane closures are necessary they will be scheduled after 8:30 a.m. to lessen the impact to the 16,800 motorists on average that travel this section of Crill Avenue daily.
FDOT hired Traffic Control Devices of Altamonte Springs to construct the project at a cost of $330,174.25. Work is expected to be complete in three months.
