I certainly haven’t had the good fortune to dine at all fifteen eateries, but Café Gelato is one of my favorite restaurants in Delaware. Their cuisine is extraordinary – especially for a college town. Their homemade gelato (a regional Italian variant of ice cream) is unmatched in the state. And their wine list has earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and the Wine Enthusiast Award of Distinction. Plus, if you let them know your birthday, they’ll send you a $20 discount coupon if you celebrate that next milestone at the Café!
If you’re looking for fun in an informal setting, it doesn’t get any more informal than the historic Deer Park Tavern. The core of the present structure was erected in the mid 1800s as the Deer Park Hotel and the Tavern is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I especially love their Sunday Brunch with live music and a make-your-own Bloody Mary Bar for just $3.00!
Finally, don’t miss the Stone Balloon Winehouse (shop, restaurant & bar). With their “farm-to-the-table” motto, “the Balloon” prides itself on having the freshest meals in town. While that may be true, I love the Stone Balloon for the cozy decor. You really feel like you’re enjoying great wine and cheeses in a picturesque European vineyard.
TravelTip: Limited on-street parking is available in Newark, but if you’re going to be in town long (and you definitely should be!), use the public lots behind the storefronts. Many of the restaurants will even give you a coupon for two hours of free parking.
Bon Appetite!
