Nestled at the northwest corner of Shoreline Park, this man-made, 50-acre lake offers an easy way to spend time on the water without a long drive to the mountains or the beach. And really, when you live in Silicon Valley, wouldn’t it be nice to get away for a quick sail in the city?
Start with a stroll
To get a view of the lake from the shore, walk around the northern edge. The southern edge is fenced off for the golf course, which is too bad, as it would be nice to be able to make a complete circuit of the lake instead of needing to backtrack halfway through.
Still, the walk gives you time to appreciate the waterfowl that inhabit the shore, the grassy knolls that line the lake, and the plentiful shade trees and benches for stopping and enjoying the view.
On any typical day, you’ll find families sailing, kids peddling bright blue or yellow paddleboats around the island in the center of the lake, or intense teens skimming small waves as they lean against the bay breeze on a windsurfer.
Getting on the water
As you can see, the real fun is on the lake itself.
The Aquatic Center at the entrance to the lake rents all sorts of equipment for spending time on the water. You can rent by the hour, half-day, or day. Colorful paddleboats are available, along with canoes, kayaks, and rowboats. And if you’d rather ride around the water than in it, you can rent bicycles there too. Those who are certified can even rent windsurfers and sailboats.
Of course if you don’t know how to windsurf or sail, the center offers private lessons for that as well.
Bring your own boat
If you have your own small craft, you can launch it for a small fee. However, no motor-powered craft are allowed, to preserve the high water quality of the lake. That’s because the lake forms part of the habitat for the area wildlife, including species of birds that otherwise couldn’t live in this part of the bay.
Afterwards
When you’re done, grab some food from the Lakeside Café next to the Aquatic Center. Or just scoot the geese aside and flop down on the grass for a rest in the shade while you watch everyone else take a turn on the lake.

Definitely a great getaway considering it's right in our own backyard. I highly recommend breakfast at Michael's if you're doing a morning visit.
