It isn't an earth-shattering deal to change the face of the team, but the Raptors did add some frontcourt depth yesterday as they acquired David Andersen from the Houston Rockets in exchange for a 2015 second-round pick.
The 30-year old made his NBA debut last season with the Rockets after spending 11 years overseas playing in Russia, Italy, Spain and Australia. Used as a back-up centre in Houston to partially make up for the loss of Yao Ming, the 6'11" Andersen averaged 5.8 points and 3.3 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game.
So, in other words, he isn't likely to make much of a difference. But then again, considering the pick sent the other way is lottery-protected from No.s 51-55, it isn't like there is a great deal of risk involved.
With the deal, the frontline corps appears set, barring a trade of Reggie Evans. Andrea Bargnani and Amir Johnson will likely serve as starters, with Ed Davis, Andersen, Joey Dorsey, Solomon Alabi and possibly Evans coming off the bench. Hardly an imposing frontcourt rotation, but one that has the chance to grow together as a unit.
Still to do for Bryan Colangelo and the Raps brass is shop Jose Calderon and try to add more scoring on the wings. In addition to covering whatever moves are made the rest of the way, I will offer my thoughts on the roster once it is set and training camp nears.
