Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott, stars of Oxygen’s reality show, Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, have become synonymous with the idea of a happy marriage. But they have a secret, a conflict so big that it threatens their very marital (and bathroom) fibers: Tori hangs her toilet paper rolling over and Dean hangs his rolling under. Shocking, sad even, but true. Tori admits, “It’s such an issue for me, that I even switch the toilet paper in other people’s homes if it’s rolling under.”
Recently the Hollywood couple partnered up with Cottonelle to settle the ongoing family debate, one which Cottonelle has found struck a chord in many homes. "… it's clear that we have hit a nerve with the American public," says Cherie Kamin, Cottonelle brand Associate Manager. "We've found that this is one of those topics that people feel strongly about - they often don't express it until they're asked.”
Cottonelle has started a campaign, called the Cottonelle Roll Poll, surveying Americans on whether they prefer the over or under way of hanging your toilet paper. Now through March 6, Americans can have their (back)side heard by going to their website and voting for over or under. Currently, over has a commanding lead in the poll at 76%! The best part? The outcome will finally end the marital dispute between Tori and Dean: "Dean and I agreed to hang our toilet paper at home whichever way America rolls - so please vote at CottonelleRollPoll.com!"
The debate isn’t just about a simple preference though - no, no, no! It’s actually a commentary on your personality. Cottonelle brought in Dr. Gilda Carle, psychotherapist and internationally-renowned relationship expert, to explain the implications of rolling over vs. under:
“If you roll over, you like taking charge, crave organization and are likely to over-achieve. If you roll under, you're laid-back, dependable and seek relationships with strong foundations. If you don't care as long as it's there, you aim to minimize conflict, value flexibility and like putting yourself in new situations.”
Does this analysis apply for Tori and Dean? Here’s what the couple had to say in an interview with mygloss.com:
GLOSS: So, according to psychotherapist Dr. Gilda Carle, the way you roll says a lot about your personality. If you roll over, you’re more of a type-A, take charge kind of person and if you roll under, you’re more laid back. Is that an accurate description of each of you?
Tori: Definitely! I’m a planner, an organizer. I would steer away from saying I’m controlling, though.
Dean: Tori’s a great multi-tasker. Me, not so much. I’m more of a one project at a time person, and generally more laid back.
To further emphasize the importance of this issue, one that divides families across the nation, Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott filmed a video for FunnyOrDie.com, illustrating how corrosive disagreeing on the over/ under debate can be on a marriage. See the video below!
