Coast Guard means danger, commitment

McCready paved way for black students

And the school wouldn’t let her share a dorm room with other students, instead clearing out an office on a separate floor.

A graduate of the academy, Miller took over the school’s academic functioning in 1997. Previously, he was the associate provost for research and economic development at West Virginia University. Miller is a retired rear admiral and a former chief of naval research in Washington.

Loyola teaches with outside service

As volunteers, students reach into community
- Since Loyola students started volunteering at nearby St. Mary of the Assumption School in Govans last year, enrollment at the struggling Catholic preschool-to-eighth-grade school jumped 40 percent.

- Pianist and composer Jeffrey Sharkey became director of The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University in 2006 after serving as dean of the Cleveland Institute of Music, director of music at the Purcell School in London and head of composition at Wells Cathedral School in England. He attended the Manhattan School of Music, earned a master’s degree in composition from Yale University and a master’s in philosophy from Cambridge University. Sharkey was a founding member of the Pirasti Piano Trio, which recorded in the United Kingdom and toured throughout Europe and the United States.
