Moderate Party will be on the ballot in 2010

Today the Rhode Island Board of Elections officially recognized a third political party in the Ocean State--the Moderate Party. It is slated to stand alongside the Democratic and Republican parties on the 2010 ballot.

Leaders of the party, which was founded only 10 months ago, submited the signatures of over 30,000 registered RI voters in favor of adding the new party to the ballot. The Moderates are now looking for candidates for the 2010 election, and in order to remain a recognized party, will have to retain at least 5% of the vote.

The party says it is looking to fill in a challenger for all seats in the General Assembly come 2010, and also one ideal canidate for Governor.

Has anyone told them that a moderate candidate is already running for Governor as an Independant?

Either way, the Moderates posted a celebratory thank you message on their website to the Rhode Islanders who gave up their "John Hancocks" for the cause.

"To the 33,998 Rhode Islanders who signed our petition sheets, the Moderate Party will do its utmost to fulfill our promise to bring positive change to our political system."
