The scales of justice met a different set of scales in a raid on a Winnipeg drug house on Thursday -- when police broke down the door of a residence on Polson Avenue they found marijuana, morphine tablets, bundles of cash -- and a 10-foot-long snake slithering around the place.
The giant-sized boa constrictor was confiscated by police. Such "pets" are also illegal in Winnipeg under an exotic pet bylaw. They arrested a 51-year-old man, who will be charged with possession of illegal drugs and one hot snake.
You might say the case puts a new twist on the term "put the squeeze on" crime. Winnipeg police officers never suspected that while they were putting the squeeze on a sleazy drug dealer, the scumbag's pet was capable of putting the squeeze on them.
Also this week in the fair city of Winnipeg, about 65 miles north of the Minnesota border, police made a major bust which nabbed 26 suspects who were in possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms, cocaine, marijuana, meth, ecstasy tablets, big bundles of cash, a .32-caliber automatic handgun, chunks of cocaine, and paraphernalia such as a money-counting machine, and a bullet-proof vest.
No news on whether this group had a giant reptile on hand, however.
The fact that his raid found bullet proof vests and automatic weapons indicates that the level of violence involved in the Winnipeg drug trade has reached a frightening new level.
One wonders how many more slimy "den of snakes" are lurking on the streets of Winnipeg, waiting to be rooted out by Canada's finest.
