The controversy in Detroit with the lack of EMS vehicles has left Detroit residents fuming. Some of the workers expressed their concern of receiving late runs that had been placed on hold for up to an hour before they received them.
We have heard the horrid stories of the EMS units arriving on the scene so late until family or police has had to do the transports themselves. Yesterday another victim has fallen victim to “ No Available EMS.”
Gordon Mickey, left the suburbs to visit his friends in Detroit when he suffered a diabetic seizure. His friends called 911, but help arrived too late. It's a story that's become all too common in the city. Events like these were asked about when this all started, the what if’s or the might be’s.
People wondered what would happen when a dire emergency would unfold and no unit would be available. Mickey was a retired principal, living across the street from John Conyers. He wasn’t a late night partier calling for help after a shoot out in the city, he was just visiting friends.
The victims’ son explained how bad the service is in Detroit. "I'm coming from Troy. I was Christmas shopping at Somerset," said Miguel Mickey, son of the deceased. "I get to the hospital, and I actually beat the ambulance getting to this hospital."
The ambulance didn’t arrive to aid Mickey until 25 minutes after the initial call was placed. By then it was too late. City council met earlier this year wanting answers as to what was going on, but nothing ever came from that meeting. People are still dying in Detroit waiting for EMS.
The nation can hear the wonderful stories of how Michigan is giving tax breaks to those wanting to make movies there, but no one seems to have the answer to the Detroit EMS problem.
Miguel Mickey says “if you think this is just a Detroit problem, think again, because once you're in the city, you're on the wait list.”
"We need to do something about the services, or we need to put signs up on a board that says you're entering Detroit at your own risk," Mickey said.
