Casual conversation Rapist has Detroit neighborhood in fear

One of his victims, a 19-year-old Detroit woman described how she lay blindfolded in the trunk of her abductor’s car, how she felt the vehicle stop and heard the driver — the man who had kidnapped her and was readying to rape her make chitchat with friends.

She later told police she felt he’d done this before, because he was so nonchalant, so cavalier. This is the description of an assault that happened on July 5^th in the areas of Philip Street and Chandler Park, on Detroit’s eastside.

Investigators search for a serial rapist who has been victimizing young women on the city’s eastside. Police reported that not only does he kidnap, blindfold and sexually assault the women, but also he makes casual conversation with passersby as he drives victims to and from the house where he assaults them.

 

In the past three weeks four women were reported to been sexually assaulted. Detroit Police spokesman John Roach confirmed that the story the woman told the police contained details similar to other victims’ reports: that the man talked to friends along his route, and that he had a stripper pole inside his home.

 

This past Sunday, a fifth woman was accosted after the suspect used his car to hit hers, but she broke free. According to the most recent victim as she gave account to the Detroit Free Press, She headed to the bus stop at Philip and Chandler Park. She didn’t want her friend, who was meeting her there, to walk down a sketchy Detroit street alone at 2 a.m.

There, she met the other 19-year-old Detroiter, and the two women began the three-block walk back home. But something behind them made them uneasy. They saw a shadow and looked back. A man walked nonchalantly, talking on a cell phone. The women dismissed their fear as paranoia. Then they looked back again. The women thought he would simply rob them and send them on their way, but instead he put a gun to one of the women head and told her to run away. She did.

She ran to a nearby house, called 911 and waited for her friend to follow. But her friend didn’t arrive until hours later, hazy and beaten, reporting she’d been kidnapped and raped. Police passed out flyers Tuesday with a composite sketch and combed the east-side neighborhoods where they believe the same man has attacked at least five times, the most recent on Sunday at Sherwood and Nevada. A woman while driving in her car was struck from behind by an older, dark, four-door car driven by the suspect, who then dragged her out of her vehicle. She fought back, kicking and clawing, and eventually escaped.

]]>The other four other women were not as lucky. The suspect, who later dropped the four off back where he grabbed them, is described as a bald black male in his 30s, about 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds, with stubby hands and a tattoo on his left forearm.

Serial rapists are uncommon even in high-crime areas, police said, but this one is particularly brazen — and getting more aggressive.
