Richard Lacayo, the art critic from Time Magazine, talked with Tim Burton about the core of his art at the MoMA exhibit. Opening with questions about ‘Vincent’ his 1982 short film, Burton says he relates to Vincent in that he was very “internalized” as a child, which was important for him “because that’s where everything comes from.” Tim called this an “autobiographical piece.”

However, when looking at one of Burton’s most successful and unique films, Edward Scissorhands, you can find a parallel world between Edward and Tim. In fact, Johnny Depp stated that “Tim is Edward” in his forward of the book ‘Burton on Burton.’ Burton reveals that Edward’s story did not come out of drawings, it came from “feelings.” Perhaps that is why this character is so relatable and another reason why Burton has such loyal fans, while intriguing outsiders in the process.

While looking through the exhibit, it is apparent that part of Burton’s genius was inspired by horror movies. Observers can see familiar works in their pre-stages, while some sketches and works remain just as they are…an idea. While being surrounded by his world at the museum, fans can dive into the process and feel "relatable" by a man’s genius that continues to amaze us.
