Johnny Depp was voted People Magazine’s sexiest man again. A close friend of Tim Burton’s, the two have a collaborative bro-mance when it comes to making movies. They are godfathers to each other’s children, and have joined together to make eight movies.
1. Edward Scissorhands (1993) – (Depp as Edward Scissorhands) a movie Johnny said gave him faith, and took him out of a life of commercial TV acting, in his forward of the book, “Burton on Burton.” A great use of German expressionism is present in this film that is said to depict Burbank, where Burton grew up.
2. Ed Wood (1994) - (Depp as Edwards D. Wood, Jr.) Though it was labeled a commercial flop at the time, this movie was well-received by critics and Burton fans.
3. Sleepy Hollow (1999) – Depp as Ichabod Crane) A very Burtonesque setting with dark, winding trees, and lurking shadows.
4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) – (Depp as Willy Wonka) A remarkable take on the original story, Burton brings Wonka, his factory, and the characters to life in a way that only he could do, and we would obsess over.
5. Corpse Bride (2005) – (Depp as Victor) A stop-motion film featuring the voice of Johnny Depp as Victor, Burton returns to this style which he masters as his genius comes to life on screen.
6. Sweeney Todd (2007) – (Depp as Todd, the demon of Barber Street) Depp won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a musical/comedy for his role, while Burton received a nomination for best director.
7. Alice in Wonderland (2010) – (Depp as The Mad Hatter) This remake of a childhood memory for a lot of us will be in theatres March 5, 2010.
A uniquely matched pair, Burton and Depp always seem to bring a sincere art, coupled with passion and intellect for their work. With talk of ‘Dark Shadows’ also starting pre-production (Depp will play the role of Barnabas Collins), Burton fans can expect a few more years of their outstanding talent to make its way onto the big screen.
