The summer's in high gear, which in many towns means that live theatre offerings are dropping off as concerts and arts festivals take center stage. Nashville is most certainly not "most towns" and there are still many terrific shows to ignite passions, exercise your laughing muscles and light up your imagination like a city night.
Here's some of what's playing this weekend!
A Sketchy Night at the East Side Performing Artist Co-Op
6/26
This sketch comedy show features contributions by local writers Emily Steele, Amy Delvin, Christy Eidson and Kayti Protos, plus Los Angeles-based Syd Lovelace. The scripts are mainly performed by their writers.
Picasso at the Lapin Agile at The Boiler Room
6/26-6/28
This long running Off-Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In Steve Martin's first comedy for the stage, the popular actor and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune
A Way Out at the Darkhorse Theater
6/26
The organizers of the Shades of Black Theatre Festival, which includes representatives from SistaStyle Productions, Dream 7 Theatre Productions and the Destiny Theatre Experience present A Way Out as a fundraiser of this year's upcoming festival. Directed by Shawn Whitsell, and written by Jene India, the show depicts the relationship between four close friends, two whose marriages are falling apart from abuse.
Legally Blonde the Musical at TPAC
6/25-6/28
See Broadway’s Tony-Nominated star Laura Bell Bundy and star of MTV’s "Legally Blonde: the Search for Elle Woods" Lauren Ashley Zakrin in Legally Blonde The Musical at TPAC’s Jackson Hall. Legally Blonde The Musical will take you from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway's brightest new heroine (and, of course, her chihuahua, Bruiser).
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse at NCT
6/26 & 6/27
Lilly is a mouse who knows what she likes. She likes that she is "Queen of the World," and she likes the way her red cowboy boots go clickety-click down the hallway. As for you, if you love to laugh, you are going to like Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse a LOT! Adapted by Kevin Kling from the book by Kevin Henkes. This play is enjoyed by all ages.
6/27
A delightful, funny and wise folk tale set in the Irish isles. A simple fisherman hooks a talking flounder who grants wishes! Though the contented fisherman wishes for nothing, his wife is quite a different story. Presented in-the-round and in the casual atmosphere of NCT's Steine Rehearsal Hall, right up close to three of Nashville's finest actors! By Larry and Vivian Snipes. Appropriate for all ages.
The Sound of Music at the Murfreesboro Center for the Arts
6/27 & 6/28
The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded.
Parallel Lives at Art Space Nashville
6/25 & 6/27
Street Theatre Company presents this rollicking play, based on the Kathy and Mo Show. It's a hysterical romp about love, life and relationships as depicted through over 30 characters, male and female, all portrayed by two very busy women!
