The Roxy Theatre Group and the Greater Miami Youth Symphony, two non-profit youth arts programs, will present Once Upon A Mattress from July 23 through Aug. 1 at The Roxy Performing Arts Center. As always, I will be there for their opening night gala. It's a great chance to share family-friendly theater with my children.
The Roxy Theatre Group and the Greater Miami Youth Symphony previously teamed up to present West Side Story (2009) and Guys and Dolls (2010) at the The Roxy Performing Arts Center. Once Upon A Mattress will feature a cast of 35 students, ages 12-22, representing over 18 different schools in Miami-Dade County.
Set in a medieval kingdom, Once Upon A Mattress weaves a tale of love, magic and adventure. Thanks to The Children’s Trust, GMYS will provide a live orchestration for the performance, that includes melodies such as 'Happily Ever After' and 'An Opening For a Princess.' GMYS is dedicated to training young musicians, ages 5-18.
Once Upon A Mattress is based on the classic story, The Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Andersen, music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller.
Once Upon A Mattress will take place from July 23 through Aug. 1, Fridays & Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 3 p.m. General admission is $20. Summer camp performances are available.
