The Roxy Theatre Group, a Miami-based non-profit arts organization for children, was awarded various recognitions at the International Dance Challenge (IDC) National Finals competition on July 11, in Orlando, Florida. I have been following a few of Roxy's outstanding students and it is always great to hear when they get an award for all their hard work.
RTG students, Gaby Diaz, 14, won Senior Miss IDC and Alexa Lorenzo, 13, won second runner up in Junior Miss IDC. Other honors included the National Senior Entertainment Challenge Champion awarded to the Advanced Musical Theatre Dance Team for the piece Temper, Temper, and National Senior Ultimate Challenge Champion won by the Modern Dance Team for the piece Armageddon.
Gaby Diaz won the prestigious title of Miss IDC with her jazz dance piece Sweet Child of Mine, choreographed by Mayda Barquin-Codero, Roxy Theatre Group Jazz/Lyrical Dance Teacher. A freshman at New World School of the Arts, Diaz compete against 64 young ladies, ages 13-18, from all over the country. Diaz has been a student with RTG for 8 years and plans to major in dance at The Julliard School.
Depicting a garden fairy in an open lyrical dance solo piece titled Enchanted, Alexa Lorenzo, 13, won second runner up for Junior Miss IDC. Enchanted was choreographed by Isabelle Tapia-Keeslar, Roxy Theatre Group Contemporary/Modern Dance Teacher. Lorenzo, an 8th grader at Conchita Espinosa Academy, competed against 53 young ladies, ages 7-13.
Lorenzo, 13, an eight-year student with the Roxy Theatre Group, plans to pursue a career in musical theatre.
