Texas Family Musicals, Inc. presents CATS in Granbury and Grapevine

Texas Family Musicals, Inc.

Texas Family Musicals, Inc. presents the musical by Andrew Lloyd, CATS. The dance performances were outstanding. CATS is a physically demanding show and this group keep up with the demands. This musical contains several dance forms, including jazz and ballet performances. But who can stop talking about the “rock” performance brought on by Kyle Rotter, as Rum Tum Tugger the “Macho” cat who knows how to work a crowd. “Work a crowd” is definitely something Kyle does well and his performance in CATS is just one of the examples. The musical numbers were top notch. The orchestra of four talented young professionals complemented this production and only enriched the already energy charged performance.

The costumes, dancing and music in Andrew Lloyd’s CATS are so spectacular that the plot is not always easily defined or translated. Cailin Heffernan, Director, is to be commended for keeping the music and choreography entertaining while at the same time clearly translating the plot of the story. There are a plethora of emotions that are caused by this annual cat meeting. The purpose of this meeting is for these young cats to choose an old cat to be honored by being allowed to be “re-born”. It was fun to see the personality of each cat as they “speak” their votes through song and dance. The cat fights are also interesting to watch. The costumes and make-up were not very elaborate, something CATS is known for, but that did not keep the performers from showcasing their feline characteristics and personalities.

Mindy Hayes voice was mesmerizing as she sings several numbers, including “Memory”. Solo performances by Erin Asselta were also stellar. Erin portrayed Jellylorum, a caring cat who became involved in every opportunity to help others. Not only her facial expressions but her body language conveyed compassion.

The children in the audience were enthralled by the many cats, quickly picking a favorite. During intermission they could be seen going through their program trying to identify each cat. They were just as anxious as the adults to get back into the theater for Act II.
