'The Laramie Project' coming to the BCA

In honor of the tenth anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s death, Bad Habits Productions will present The Laramie Project December 5-December 13.

Shepard was the gay college student brutally killed in a horrific hate crime in 1998. The play, written by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, centers around the reaction to the murder of the 21-year-old. Eight actors portray more than 70 roles, each of them based on extensive interviews by the theater company.

The Laramie Project is a bold, original play that uses a cacophony of voices and perspectives to retell this tragic moment in American history. The play has been recognized as one of the first theatrical productions to so thoroughly explore GLBT issues and has also been a tool in educating the public about homophobia, hate crimes, and bigotry. It challenges audiences to confront their own ideas of tolerance and acceptance – and celebrates the power of forgiveness.

A film version was made in 2002, premiering at Sundance and debuting on HBO. The movie was written and directed by Kaufman, and featured an all-star cast, including Nestor Carbonell, Laura Linney, Clea DuVall, Christina Ricci, and Amy Madigan.

The Laramie Project will be performed at the BCA Plaza Black Box. It runs two hours, thirty minutes, with one intermission.

Apparently Fred Phelps and his band of idiots plan to protest at the play. But, in a fun twist, you can sponsor them in a protest-a-thon to benefit GLBT rights! The longer they protest, the more we make. Check out www.drivingequality.com for more.
