Company One, a resident theater company at the Boston Center for the Arts, will be staging After the Quake beginning July 17. Under the direction of Shawn LaCount, the play will be having its Boston premiere at the BCA’s Plaza Theatre.

Quake is based on the short stories of Japanese writer Haruki Murakami and tells the story of a world caught up in the aftermath of a shattering catastrophe. Drawn from Murakami’s book of the same name, these stories were originally penned in response to the Kobe earthquake that devastated Japan in 1995. In the stage version, a shy suitor courts a former lover, all the while calming her nervous daughter with fantastic tales of a giant frog who saves Tokyo.

The play was adapted by Frank Galati, who won two Tony Awards in 1990 for his adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath. Galati is a staple of the Chicago theater scene and has been awarded nine Joseph Jefferson Awards for his contributions. After the Quake originally premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 2007.

The Company One production stars Martin Lee, Sydney K. Penny, Chen Tang, Michael Tow, and Giselle Ty.

After the Quake runs July 17 – August 15.
