Amazing Race' 16 recap: Grandmother/granddaughter Jody and Shannon eliminated (episode two)

Jody and Shannon, grandmother and granddaughter, were eliminated from "The Amazing Race" season 16 on episode two (Feb. 21, 2010).

This week, the teams stayed in Chile but got the chance to explore the country even more. The race really came down to Jody and Shannon, who were moving a little slower than the other teams, versus Louie and Michael, who got very lost while searching for the location of the roadblock. The two teams were neck and neck when Louie and Michael finally did find the roadblock, but the grandmother/granddaughter team just wasn't quick enough to keep up with the two detectives.

Jet and Cord were team number one this week, taking home a sailboat each as their prize.

Alliances and autobus problems

Before the teams had even left for their first clue, Carol and Brandy were already thinking about which team they wanted to align with. They were thinking Joe and Heidi because they felt Joe is a strong competitor. Joe and Heidi were on board to work together, and it wasn't long before their alliance caused some tension. Joe and Heidi were standing in line to get tickets for the bus. Louie and Michael were right behind them. Carol and Brandy tried to move ahead of Louie and Michael, claiming they were with Joe and Heidi, but Louie and Michael were not having it and felt Joe was acting immature by saving spots. Carol and Brandy got their way, though, by giving Joe and Heidi money, and the foursome got the last seats on the earliest bus.

Carol and Brandy thought they were the smartest on the race. They thought they were ahead of everyone. What they didn't know was that Jet and Cord, Jeff and Jordan and Brente and Caite were taking a bus to another city to pick up a bus that would arrive at the destination of their clue almost eight hours before the other teams. It seemed to be the best idea, and it was for Jet and Cord, who were on their way by 7:00 p.m. without problems.

Unfortunately for Jeff and Jordan and Brente and Caite, they were at the wrong terminal. Their bus was leaving from a terminal located 10 minutes away. They tried to make it but missed the bus, so they headed back to the original terminal, only to learn they had missed that bus, too. It was a complete disaster that left them stranded until the morning.

They didn't end up in too bad of positions before finding the clue (fourth and fifth).

Detour

For the episode two detour, the teams had to either capture a llama and dress it in the appropriate garb or dress like a giant condor and try to fly to a target not far from a pier.

They say that llamas can be quite temperamental, but Jet and Cord had no problems dressing their llama. In fact, it was like the llama was waiting for them to put clothing on it. Once again, they are impressive. The other teams that decide to dress a llama weren't so lucky. The llamas were running away from them and spitting at them. I think the best strategy was definitely that of Louie and Michael, who cornered the llama with two sticks.

Brente and Caite, Jeff and Jordan and Steve and Allie chose the flying detour. It seemed like a horrible idea because I never thought they would make it to the target, but they were allowed to swim out to the target after they tried to fly, so it actually seemed easier. No animal fighting involved with this task. Plus, it was hilarious to watch.

Road block

For the episode two road block, one person from each team had to collect five of the ingredients that make up a traditional cake called Kuchen. Of course, this didn't mean just heading to the local supermarket. Instead, the person needed to get eggs from the coup, milk straight from the cow and butter, sugar and flour from the pantry.

Jet and Cord were the first to complete this road block, and it looked like they would have no problem making it to the pit stop, Gruta de La Virgen in Chile, first.

This roadblock was fairly easy for all of the teams, although it did come with a few dangers, like the cows kicking them in the face. Thankfully, no one had a problem with the baker's dozen, which is 13 eggs, not 12 eggs.

Next episode (Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010): Carol and Brandy interrogate Jet and Cord about their recent win and attacked one another when things don't go exactly right
