Texas Tech Defense Shows Promise

The Texas Tech defense showed many good signs in Tech's 35-27 win over SMU. The secondary played better than expected and there were few blown assignments, or at least they were not obvious to the casual fan. Despite running a new system the defense held up well, especially against a high powered SMU offense. The defense is to be commended for the their effort on Sunday.

Since the end of the game on Sunday, many in the Lubbock media have tried to tell Red Raider nation that it did not see what it saw on the field. The basic spin is this: This Texas Tech team cares more about defense than at any time in the past ten years. Finally, Texas Tech will try and play some defense. The unspoken premise is that Texas Tech never played any good defense under former coach Mike Leach.

Perhaps if those in the media want to take cheap shots at Mike Leach, they could at least be truthful. Apparently the defense that held SMU to 27 points is far superior to the defense that held OU to 13 points last season. Sunday's defense is better than the defense which was also responsible for winning games against Kansas and Baylor. The idea of the defense winning two or three games for the Red Raiders is not really a big change since it happened last season.

Will this Texas Tech defense will be better than any defense of the past decade? They certainly have a chance to be better and eventually probably will be better. However, that is really not the issue. Why does the medial insist on saying that the fan base should support this team and then turn around in the next breath and attack Coach Leach?

Everyone one should ask themselves who is paying these media members? If people really look, they may find the ones that are doing the most talking are also the ones that are being paid directly or indirectly (through media rights and advertising) by Texas Tech. It is a little hard to take these media members at face value when they have a dog in the fight.  Hearing some of the Lubbock media talk about the last ten years is sort of like listening to a senator say that the government should apologize to BP for making the company pay for the gulf oil spill.

It is a funny thing about that senator, his biggest contributor was big oil. Similarly, many who are trying to take cheap shots at the former coach are tied financially to Texas Tech. Do they really expect the public to believe that their rooting interest in Texas Tech has nothing to do with their commentary?

Great point. Defense looked OK but the Longhorns would have eaten that defense alive. All I saw was a less hihg powered offense that did not run the jailbreak screen, over the middle screen, the delayed shuttle pass to our RBs or Potts run with the ball despite never having a single Mustang take his fakes seriously. In fact, Sticks would have gained 150 years rushing Saturday.
