The Iowa State Cyclones came into the game against the Texas Longhorns with very little energy. The Cyclones may have spent too much energy in their 26 point win over the Red Raiders of Texas Tech a few days ago.
The Horn’s would hold of a late charge to take a 62-55 win over the Cyclones. The win ends a three game losing streak by Texas.
The normally hot outside shooting of the Cyclones was absent in the first half going only 1-8 from the three point line.. Texas was worst from behind the three point line going 0-8 in the first half. The Cyclones would only finish with 5 three point baskets 4 under their season’s average.
Clint Chapman would take the offensive charge for the Longhorns in the first half. He would go 4-6 and grab five rebounds to help Texas go into to halftime with a 28-22 lead. Chapman would finish with those same numbers.
Royce White would have 11 points at halftime, but did not get much help from his teammates. White would finish the game with finish the game with 15 points and 15 rebounds. White would have trouble as usual from the free throw line only making 1 of 7 attempts.
Texas lead would get to as many as 18 points with 13:38 left in the game at 44-26. However the Cyclones would go on a 13-4 run to cut Texas lead in half at 48-39.
The last four minutes of the game would be the most exciting part of the game. With 3:32 left Myck Kabongo would hit a jumper to give the Horns a 52-42 lead. Tyrus Mcgee would hit a three point in the corner for the Cyclones and Sheldon McClellan would hit a jumper to extend the lead to 54-45 for Texas.
Percy Gibson’s layup would cut the lead to 54-47 with 2:21 left. J’Covan Brown would make a driving layup with 1:10 left and was fouled to stretch the lead back to ten points 57-47. Chris Allen would hit a three pointer with 38 seconds left to make it 57-52.
Julien Lewis would go to the line for the 1 and 1 and would make 1-2 to make it 58-52. Chris Babb would hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 58-55 with 25.2 left in the game. With 21.6 seconds Brown would make two free throws to extend the Texas lead to 60-55. Kabango would get a steal with 13 seconds left and make a breakaway layup to ice the game.
“As long as we’re making progress in the process, I’m happy with it. We played against a team this is having a great year.” Rick Barnes said. Barnes attributes his team’s defense of the three shots by Iowa State to how his team ran the offense, which prevented transition points by the Cyclones.
Texas (13-7 3-4 Big 12) will travel to Waco to play Baylor at noon on Saturday January 28 on CBS. Iowa State (14-6 4-3 Big 12) will return home to play the fourth ranked Kansas Jayhawks.
