Cabo Wabo tequila reposado
Cabo Wabo tequila was developed by former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar - now the front man for the band Chickenfoot. It's taste has been refined over the last two decades.
Cabo Wabo is a solid premium tequila brand. The blanco is tasty but better for mixing, and the reposado works great to sip or mix.
Cabo Wabo Blanco Tasting Notes
Cabo Wabo tequila blanco is crystal clear, bottled straight after distillation. It has a nice, floral aroma with a hint of citrus and pepper. Like many blancos, it is a bit harsh on the nose as the alcohol presents itself up front.
The blanco is a bit oily on the tongue, and the first sip is a bit harsh. But the harshness gives way to a very unique agave flavor that is distinctly Cabo Wabo. It is one of those tequilas you can immediately recognize. The blanco tastes just like it smells - it has a nice balance of sweet floral and citrus that is cut with black pepper. This gives it a great finish, where the agave flavor blossoms late as the harshness of the alcohol mellows.

Cabo Wabo Reposado Tasting Notes
Cabo Wabo tequila resposado is aged in American oak casks for four to six month. It gives off a beautiful amber glow, and it's got great legs, too. The reposado sure looks great in the glass.
The reposado aroma is much better than the blanco. The rested Cabo loses the harshness of the blanco, and gives way to citrus notes - orange and pineapple - with a slight scent of pears. The smell ends with a zing of black pepper.
I like sipping the Cabo Wabo reposado. Like one of Sammy's songs (and almost opposite from the blanco), it kicks in hard and spicy first, and then settles into a sweet agave melody. The citrus and black pepper harmonizes well in the background, and the reposado's finish is mellow and satisying.

Cocktail Tasting and Mixing Notes for Cabo Wabo Blanco and Reposado
Cabo Wabo tequilas have been featured in quite a few of the cocktails on the Tequila Examiner site. I find both work really well for mixing, and use the blanco more than the reposado. (It may be because the reposado is so nice to simply sip.) One of my favorite creations is the Diablo Negro - a black margarita that is great for Halloween.
Cabo Wabo blanco and resposado work great in margaritas, but I found the most satisfying margarita was made with a little of both! Here's the recipe I think works best for Cabo Wabo:
Tequila Examiner's Caborita
Ingredients:
- 1 oz of Cabo Wabo blanco
- 1 oz of Cabo Wabo resposado
- 1/2 oz triple sec
- 1/4 oz agave nectar
- 1 1/2 oz lime juice
Directions:
- Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice.
- Shake and strain into a martini or margarita glass.

Cabo Wabo? Heh heh...some friends of mine recently returned from their honeymoon in Mexico- they visited the area that makes this brand of tequila. I must try some!
I've been avoiding Cabo Wabo because of the price. I think I will try it now, thanks Ryan.
