The Kastles mean business, signing the #10 ranked player in the world, Russian star Nadia Petrova. As the Kastles enter the final stretch to their regular season with three matches remaining, two at home on July 21 and July 22, they can still reach the Eastern Conference playoffs where they will face off again against the New York Sportimes. That could be a grudge match.
In their last match against the Sportimes, John McEnroe crossed the net yelling at Kastles’ Leander Paes. The ruckus began when McEnroe’s partner Robert Kendrick served a ball into Paes while he was playing the net. The Kastles ended up being penalized a point. The Sportimes defeated the Kastles that evening in a squeaker, 20-19.
The Kastles are pulling out all the stops to get a rematch against the Sportimes in Washington in an Eastern Conference championship match that would be played on Friday, July 24. They have signed Petrova expressly to have her help them get to that Eastern Conference championship match, and hopefully beyond that to a WTT championship. With both Serena Williams and Nadia Petrova playing for the Kastles, chances for a championship look good.
But first the Kastles face competition for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth from the Boston Lobsters and Philadelphia Freedoms. Two wins in their last three would clinch a playoff spot for the Kastles.
WTT Championship Final will be on Sunday, July 26 at Kastles Stadium.
This is more than we could have hoped for. The 2009 WTT tennis season has heated up, with several teams in the thick of the battle for this championship, and Washington is in the mix.
As this WTT season has demonstrated, when the pros go head to head, the competitive instinct kicks in. This is real athletic competition, with a lot of fun thrown in.
