Roger Federer got the win he wanted heading into the French Open next week. With a 6-4, 6-4 straight set victory over Rafael Nadal on Sunday, Federer earned his second Madrid Open title.

The 13-time Grand Slam winner’s victory over four-time defending French Open champion Nadal should be a valuable confidence booster for Federer.

“At this stage it does, considering I hadn’t won a tournament yet [this season],” the Swiss star said. “It’s all finally paying off but it’s not the moment to get carried away. I’m very excited going to Paris whereas a couple of weeks ago I was still a little bit unsure about my game.”

The last time that Federer defeated Nadal on clay was two years ago in Hamburg. The win snapped Nadal’s 81-match winning streak on the surface. However, that year he lost to the Spaniard in the French Open final in four sets.

This year’s French Open will represent the first time that Federer enters the tournament behind Nadal in the world rankings. At the beginning of Roland Garros this Sunday, Federer will be ranked number 2 behind Nadal in the world rankings.

Federer is looking to capture his first Grand Slam win on the clay courts of Roland Garros. For the past three years, he has lost to Nadal in the final, each one a more convincing victory for Nadal.

Winning the French Open would tie Federer with Pete Sampras for the most Grand Slam titles in the Open Era with 14.  He has won three Australian Opens titles, five Wimbledon titles, and five US Open titles, and winning a French Open would complete a career Slam.
