There is a major problem among children in America, childhood obesity. Major changes need to take place to take on this problem and it needs to start at home, right now.
Parents are definitely buying better foods for their kids to eat and many school districts taking drastic measures with the lunch foods and snacks offered.
This alone is not enough and more needs to be done to tackle this epidemic. Kids in America need to learn active living skills.
Two women in America feel like they have a solution.
Former professional tennis player, Gigi Fernandez and Valerie Stern, have launched the first of many interactive DVD's for young children, called Baby Goes Pro.
"As a professional athlete and mom, I am well aware of the benefits participating in sports can bring to life of a child, both mentally and physically," said Fernandez. " With childhood obesity on the rise in the US, it is our hope that EMKEI's lessons will inspire children to make sports a priority, even at an early age."
What is EMKEI? It's an animated character, EMKEI the monkey, who is the host and coach on the DVDs. EMKEI stands for, Equipment, Movement, Know-How, Externals and Instruction. The DVDs are designed to influence children at a young age, the basic fundamentals of sports and the importance of movement.
Could the problem with Americas children facing obesity, be changed by teaching children at an early age proper movement? Many people feel that it will. In her research, Gigi contacted noted Sports Psychologist Jim Loehr Ph.D. He suggested that Gigi read the book , by New York Times bestselling author Daniel Coyle called, The Talent Code. Daniel Coyle spent two years conducting research on children in sports and he concluded what Gigi and others feel, and that talent must be cultivated.
This DVD is the first in a series that is a must have for any family with young children. With busy schedules, its hard to find the time to teach children the basics of sports, these DVDs's will do just that. This is a true gift to the children of America and definitely highly recommended.
