Nine years ago in Memphis, Devin Britton was a ball boy for a Tommy Haas match, providing the 9-year-old Britton with quite a thrill.
On Tuesday at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Haas played Britton in a first-round match of the SAP Open. Although Britton took Haas to a second-set tribreaker, the fourth-seeded Haas advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory.
Haas, 31, may not be beating Britton for much longer, though. The 18-year-old Britton turned pro over the summer after being just the third freshman to capture the NCAA singles title last spring. Britton did it while at Mississippi, and the other two freshmen who won NCAA men's singles titles were Cecil Mamiit of USC in 1996 and John McEnroe of Stanford in 1977.
.Also Tuesday, sixth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber outlasted Rajeev Ram 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Earlier Tuesday, Mardy Fish withdrew from the tournament with an ankle injury.
The Bryan brothers were scheduled to play a doubles match later Tuesday evening, and No. 7 seed Sam Querrey was also scheduled to play his first-round singles match Tuesday night.
