Andy Roddick and U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro both lost first-round matches in different tournaments on Tuesday to players with triple-figure rankings.
In his first match since his third-round loss in the U.S. Open, Roddick lost to a qualifier, Lukasz Kubot, 6-2, 6-4, in the China Open in Beijing.
Kubot, ranked 143rd, did not win a main-draw match in any of his past six tournaments, and failed to get out of the qualifying rounds in four of them. But he broke Roddick's serve five times to upset the defending champ. Roddick smashed his racket is disgust during the match.
Rafael Nadal, who has been bothered by an abdominal problem in recent months,struggled a bit in his first match since the U.S. Open, but he prevailed against Marcos Baghdatis 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
However, del Potro, the man who eliminated Nadal in the U.S. Open, did not escape an upset, losing in in Tokyo, Japan, to qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-4. Roger-Vasselin is ranked No. 189 in the world and had not won a main-draw match in an ATP World Tour event since July 2008.
