I am quite sure our friends on the Left are having a field day this afternoon, when the formerly-well-written (when Brittney Gilbert did most of the writing) blog Nashville is Talking published a story accusing former Tennessee Republican Communications Director Bill Hobbs of domestic violence, after his wife went to the hospital with a migraine and said that Hobbs hit her by accident:
If anyone out there cares what I, Bill’s wife, have to say, what Bill posted is true. Bill did not strike me intentionally, I did not want these charges filed, I and the assistant district attorney in charge signed an agreed order prior to the hearing to request bond restrictions be lifted, and after hearing my statement the ADA dismissed the charges.
Domestic violence is very serious business indeed, and it doesn't matter what the political or religious persuasion of the abuser might be, abusers deserve far more than to have their name dragged through the mud. However, any allegation where Bill Hobbs may be involved must be tempered with the reality that our friends on the Left despise Bill Hobbs with a passion, because they know that Hobbs played as big a role as anyone in helping bring a Republican majority to both houses of the Tennessee General Assembly. Hobbs' indispensability to the conservative movement has been such that when he was fired by Chris Devaney when Devaney replaced Robin Smith as State Republican Chairman, I threw a ring-eyed fit, believing that this move wasn't a good opening salvo for Devaney, and demonstrated that the new Chairman was on disconnect with the ordinary folks out in the grassroots fields. Even the smarter people on the Left thought at the time that it was one of the worst political moves Devaney could have possibly made-and were clearly pleased about it (since that time, I have come to think it may have been better that Bill moved on, for other reasons not necessarily to do with Chairman Devaney).
Even Hobbs basically admitted that he was let go when I talked to him at this year's Statesman's Dinner, when I told him he wasn't getting the credit he deserved for his help with all that had happened over the past year, and the party may regret his departure in the long run, he said "well, let them regret it."
Obviously, I hope and pray Bill Hobbs' (and his wife's) version of the story in this case is true, and we have no reason not to believe it. I have always admired Bill, and his work has been an inspiration for my own. When dealing with a situation like this where one of the persons involved is a high-profile political figure who is viciously hated by a certain segment of the other side, one has to remember that when something like this comes to the fore, whether it has substance or not the vultures will circle about. For his part, even Roger Abramson (with whom I very often disagree) said this today on Post Politics about the Hobbs situation:
For what it’s worth, no, I don't know what happened here. Neither do any of you. What I will say is this:
I used to work with Bill Hobbs and I’ve met him, his wife and his children on a number of occasions. While I grant you that spouse abusers don’t wear signs on their chests saying “I’m a spouse abuser,” based on what I know about him, if Bill Hobbs is indeed a spouse abuser, then I’m the King of Sweden.Just my two cents.
I would suggest we pray for the Hobbs family, and be glad it isn't us in the fishbowl.

David, with all due respect, have you read the police report at NiT? Are you disputing the documents of record? Are you implying the officers were mistaken in their report?
This is a horrible situation, and I certainly hope that something like this never happens again, but this is in no way a political attack with a police report like that.
Do not trivialize this situation. May they both get the help they need to overcome this situation.
If you were a smart man, you would recognize just how radioactive this has made Bill Hobbs. I mean really--- Playing down domestic abuse?
"Mrs. Hobbs stated that on 10-11-2009 at approx 11:15 PM she and her husband William got into an argument that turned physical when Mr. Hobbs struck the left side of Mrs. Hobbs head and knocked her down".
Seriously there is no way to play this down. Anna Hobbs signed that police report, so it is good as gold.
