Hand cut corned beef on sourdough roll and potato salad at Tommy's Joynt
The hofbrau, shortened from Hofbrauhaus, literally the court brewery, a casual eatery, may have been a gift from the Germans, but Tommy's Joynt is a gift to San Francisco.
Virtually unchanged since the day it opened in 1947, and continually family owned and operated as well, this classic San Francisco destination has lots of authentic German hofbrau style and flavor and the local history to back it up.
First, there is no mistaking the distinctive mural exterior of this famous eatery on the corner of Geary and Van Ness. Intimidated by lines? Don't be. At Tommy's, make your choices quickly, because the line and the chefs move swiftly. Don't bother with frills-there not needed. The juicy braised corned beef, ham, turkey, pastrami and brisket, hand cut and piled high on your choice of bread stand on their own, clocking in at a value packed (and hardly changed) $5.60. Make it a dinner platter with your choice of a side and bread for $8.50. German sausage sandwiches with either bratwurst, kielbasa, or knockwurst, a mere $3.25. Daily specials range from braised oxtails to salmon and of course buffalo meat chili or stew everyday.
If you haven't been for a while, stop in for a bite and a drink at the bar. With over 100 imported and domestic beers, $3.25 well drinks and $3.75 martinis, a classic Irish coffee and a large selection of tequilas, there is something for everyone.
Tommy's Joynt, located at 1101 Geary at Van Ness remains a San Francisco original.
