The Temple Owls (8-2) scored 49 unanswered points, defeating Akron 56-17 on Friday night. The game was Temple's eighth straight win and keeps them on pace to match their historical best record (10-2 in 1979).

Temple continued their dominant defensive play and rushing attack, with continued improvement in the passing game, rounding out what may be the best Philadelphia team in college football history.

Chester Stewart made his second start of the season (6/11, 145 yards). Stewart tallied four touchdowns on the night, completing two TDs via the pass and adding two more on the ground.

After a shaky first quarter the Owls got the spark they needed when Delano Green returned an Akron punt 66 yards for a touchdown, giving Temple a 21-17 lead.

The Owls dominated the remainder of the game.

Temple’s all-time leading freshmen rusher, Bernard Pierce, led the Owls ground attack (19 carries for 97 yards with 1 TD). When the Owls went up 42-17 in the third, it allowed Pierce to take the remainder of the night off nursing a minor shin injury.

In all, seven Owls would carry the ball for a total of 258 yards.

With the dominating performance, the entire travel team seemed to be inserted late into the game.
QB Vaughn Charlton (season starter) made a return late as a backup and RB Kee-ayre Griffin even showed up on the defensive side of the ball playing CB.

The 56 points are the most points scored under head coach Al Golden, and the most since Temple topped Rutgers, 56-28, on October 30, 1999.

Temple will return home to face Kent State this coming Saturday November 21st, at Lincoln Financial Field.

With a Temple win over Kent, and an Ohio loss, Temple will clinch its first ever MAC East crown and a spot in the MAC championship game. (Friday ,December 4th, in Detroit, MI).
