A decade of Spongebob Squarepants

On July 17, 2009, Nickelodeon will celebrate the tenth anniversary of Bikini Bottom's favorite frycook, the one and only, Spongebob Squarepants. In honor of its terrific Porifera, Nickelodeon will broadcast a fifty hour marathon from July 17-19 entitled, “The Ultimate Spongebob Spongebash Weekend”. As part of this programming schedule, the network will include eleven premiere Spongebob events.

"Spongebob Squarepants", which made its debut on July 17, 1999, has been the number-one rated animated show in the children ages 2-11 demographic for seven consecutive years, and is aired in twenty-five markets and one-hundred and seventy-one different languages. It is the most extensively dispersed property in the history of MTV Networks.

As a precursor to the blockbuster affair, VH1 will air “Square Roots: The Story of Spongebob Squarepants” on Tuesday, July, 14, 2009 at 9PM ET/PT. The hour long documentary, chronicling Spongebob's rise to stardom and the show's influence on pop culture, will feature appearances from multiple celebrity personalities, including basketball icon, Lebron James. The opening segment of the program will feature a song by Avril Lavigne.

The main event on Nickelodeon kicks off with the premiere of “To Squarepants or Not to Squarepants”, on Friday, July 17, 2009 at 8PM. This will be followed by the ten most memorable Spongebob episodes as selected by fans, beginning on Saturday July 18, at 10AM and ending at 8PM with a showing of 2004's “The Spongebob Squarepants Movie”  (cast your vote at: http://spongebob.nick.com/tent-pole/bash/voting/). The weekend concludes with ten never before seen Spongebob premieres beginning at 7PM on Sunday, July 19.

Spongebob also serves as a spokes-sponge, as part of Nickelodeon's continuing “The Big Green Help” campaign for ecological awareness and conservation. This is accomplished in part through implementing the kid-friendly “Spongebob and You Save the Big Blue”, a team ocean conservation effort between Nickelodeon, the National Resources Defense Council and the National Wildlife Federation.
