Neil Patrick Harris as host of 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards
Last night's 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, was the most enjoyable Emmy show in a long time. NPH has become one of the most charming and funny hosts for award shows ever. The only thing left for him to host is the Oscars.
Best Quotes of the 2009 Emmy Awards show:
1. NPH on wanting to keep the show flowing smoothly: "Here's hoping that Kanye West likes 30 Rock".
2. Julia Louis-Dreyfus as presenter: "We are honored to present the last official year of broadcast TV".
3. Kristen Chenowith in her acceptance speech: "I am now unemployed, so I would like to be on Mad Men. I also like The Office."
4. NPH after losing the Best Supporting Actor award to Jon Cryer: “Well, the night could have gone in two directions. We are now in the second direction. Change of plans, we’re going to go a little bit faster tonight."
5. Alec Baldwin in his acceptance speech after winning Best Actor in a Comedy: "I would trade this to look like him", pointing to presenter Rob Lowe, looking better than ever.
6. NPH when bringing out the next presenters: "Please welcome the comedy stylings of Kiefer Sutherland and Anna Torv."
7. Ricky Gervais on why he prefers the Emmys to the Oscars because television actors aren't as good looking as film stars: "In this room, I’m probably above average. Steve Carell is considered handsome…Rainn Wilson…” He is the funniest presenter on every award show he is on. Will he ever be given a chance to host?
8. Billy Crystal to David Letterman in nominee clip: "Aren't you on at 10?"
9. Tina Fey on 30 Rock's Best Comedy win: "We want to thank our friends at NBC for keeping us on the air even though we are so much more expensive than a talk show". Great digs to Leno's show.
Most Entertaining Bits of the 2009 Emmys:
1. Dr. Horrible sketch - The timing was clever, using this bit to get away from the boring accountant speech. Bringing on Nathan Fillion in his Captain Hammer role was brilliant. Loved every second of this.
2. Opening musical act with NPH singing "Put Down the Remote". Anybody that could rattle off all of the network name that quickly is amazing.
3. Family Guy cartoon - the best part of this was NPH in the cartoon and using the phrases "Bro code" and "suit up" from How I Met Your Mother.
4. NPH acting upset about his loss and being angry at Jon Cryer througout the show.
5. Clips of TV series at the beginning of each genre segment. Nice to see a clip of Battlestar Galactica in the drama segment, even though the Emmys snubbed this fantastic series every year.
6. The presentation of nominees for Best Variety Writing. The Colbert Report writers stood outside of David Letterman’s studio, The Daily Show Writers as Clunkers, Late Night with Conan O’Brien as friend requests being deleted by Conan, Billy Crystal performing a song about Letterman's writers, and NBC news anchor Brian Williams read the names of the nominees from Saturday Night Live.
Biggest Disappoinments of the 2009 Emmy Awards:
1. NPH did not do a closing number ala The Tony Awards. That was the best part of the Tonys and many were looking forward to it all night.
2. Too many repeat winners. Bryan Cranston is great, but when is Hugh Laurie going to win an Emmy for House? Alec Baldwin is amazing in 30 Rock, but Jim Parsons in The Big Bang Theory is probably the funniest man on a situation comedy today. Mad men again as Best Drama? - Lost had its best year since the first and every episode was perfect.
Nicest Moments of the 2009 Emmy Awards:
1. Kristen Chenowith winning for Best supporting actress in a Comedy. She managed to be very emotional, yet funny and charming at the same time.
2. Michael Emerson winning Best supporting actor in a Drama. He has deserved this award since day one of playing Ben on Lost. Very eloquent speech how what began as flying to Hawaii for a one episode guest part, turned into 4 more years and the role of a lifetime.
3. Toni Collette winning for playing multiple personalities on The United States of Tara even though not many people have seen the show. She was thrilled.
4. Jeff Probst and Jon Stewart commending NPH on his wonderful job hosting. Probst was part of the reality host debacle at the Emmys last year and Stewart hosted the Oscars a few years ago to not so wonderful reviews.
Let's hope that Neil Patrick Harris becomes a staple of all awards show from this point on.
